so, after a little break we’re back with a new release. this time we’re joined by the multi-talented production powerhouse that is swarm intelligence (aka simon hayes). landing heavy with four bruising techno cuts that each find their own unique way of taking your head off, ear017 is a bumpy journey through darker club flavours. ‘flatlands’ opens things up, reminiscent of the type of marching, granite-heavy brum techno of old – this is minimal in construction but maximum in its impact. move forward to ‘ground up’ where demonic, dissonant keys take the lead above a rattling midrange that sounds like a corrugated roof ready to fly off. opting for cleaner, elastic drum patterns on ‘tingla’, hayes swaps tense for dense, with a loud take on steppy techno, that’ll please fans of some of blawan’s earlier work. ‘skitz’ starts out an a more dub tip with a wailing, paranoia inducing hook and snaking rhythms, eventually joined by more hard-hitting broken kicks, leading us comfortably into oblivion.

number 6 of the series introduces two further tracks of the sound adventure that superpitcher is taking us on this year. side a features protest song. if music is a way of transporting us to other places, protest song takes us to a desolate, scary and loveless environment, a burnt-down, burnt-out place where the flesh of its former inhabitants is smouldering, void of goodwill and kindness in a cloud of toxic and greedy smoke. it’s all kafka and orwell and suffering - the most twisted and eerie track so far in the golden ravedays saga. what is undeniably clear is an acute sense of regret and loss - a warning that it could have been avoided, had we only listened to our hearts and protested. in the same vein on side b we hear powerful resistance. produced after the paris attacks of 2015 superpitcher outdid himself with this strong message of resistance. where protest song paints a picture of under-worldly doom, resistance’s techno beat and insistent refrain sweeps us to the surface of the muck of hatred and intolerance we’ve politically been dumped in. a voice that seems like a trapped animal is calling out to us. what is it trying to say? is it crying out for help? is that animal all of us? resistance represents hope and encouragement and could be the perfect marching track to any demonstration against negative forces. much needed in this age of bigotry where it seems like time has leaped backwards to a darker side of history. as for the dancefloor – resistance is irresistible!

bunkr enslave dust-coated synthesizers, dilapidated drum machines and rusty fx boxes to craft 4/4 tunes for their impatient overlords. their vision is clear they will make techno, they will make house, they will make electronica, and you will listen and dance. its not yet clear if bunkr is the work of one frenzied human or many lazy individuals but we do know one thing - the ringleader is one james dean, who previously released as lost idol on labels such as pork recordings, nature, final frontier and cookshop. following a prolonged spell of writing music at slow tempos, dean initiated bunkr as a reactionary desire to speed things up. too much time had been spent just sitting around - it was time to stop sitting and start dancing. true to their vision, here we have cloud chaser, a bubbling jam backed with a huge remix from shan, who flips the mix with dramatic strings, sprinkles of magic dust and massive amen breaks. no less impressive is junos revenge, a track youd turn up on your headphones while taking a nice afternoon stroll on the moon, on a sunny morning after a long interplanetary rave. igor tipura delivers the rework, complete with a marching percussion workout and acid chemtrails that will send you right back to 1993.

rome native marco piovesan is a dj’s producer. his driving style, pristine sound quality and nuanced tones makes his techno of the variety that draws bodies to the dance floor, and keeps them there. 2013 was his breakout year which saw releases land on gynoid audio, m_rec ltd.. that same year piovesan launched his own enterprise, h.omevvork recordings, as a haven for richly emotive techno music imbued in ‘90s spirit. to date it’s three ep’s have been remixed by luminaries such as giorgio gigli, daub and m_rec ltd’s sadly departed chief max_m. piovesan joined the key roster soon after as part of a split ep with another (then) up-and-comer, hector oaks. his two works, “black paranoid 7” and “black paranoid 10”, were clean, steely dj fodder underscored with a dark energy that made both of them potent club weapons. now piovesan returns with four cuts of surging, remorseless marching material design to tear up strobe-lit basements and big room halls alike. for djs who take no prisoners, who enjoy calling on the old techno ghosts too.

1800haightstreet stacking up some serious mountainous techno heat from the depths of vancouver. an insect army marching upon the world, with no hope and only apocalyptic horns and terror-inducing drones emanating from the heavens.

black country overlord justin k broadrick (jesu, godflesh) blesses regis’ downwards fiefdom with two tracks and a tightly sprung rework by surgeon. downwards have really picked the foulest iterations of a grim set for vinyl release, inscribing the industrial-strength torque of nothing is free - which sounds like early kode 9 battered by shapednoise - at 45rpm across the front face, and branding the knuckling 808 snares and distended electro bass blow out of kontorted on its backside. surgeon’s remix of the title tune ranks among his best in many years. trace elements of the original are extruded thru modular kit and remodelled on a bouncing, swerving techno chassis recalling bmb and cub classics, but streaked with sirens and vamped by a marching brass refrain that’s just spoiling for war. the release marks a long overdue overlap between downwards’ and broadrick’s interrelated industrial, noise and techno circles. broadrick was the original drummer for napalm death on their scum (1987) album, before forming the legendary godflesh, and carving out an oeuvre as one of the most feared and respected musicians to emerge from birmingham and the uk ever since.

novoline makes music with equipment that was manufactured in 1988 and 1989, controlled via midi by two atari sts. as a sequencer he is using an algorithmic composition program that is 25 years old. with this program he creates sequences that he modulates live by shifting numbers and settings while recording. the process is improvised and contains a good portion of randomly generated melodies and drums, carefully selected and combined by novoline. the result sounds a little like something between a dark 80’s sci-fi soundtrack and an endless marching new beat extended version.

jami bassols has been a close member of hivern since its beginnings as one half of aster. now, following the release of noche/ templo, his two acclaimed edits for nvh, he returns to the label with his solo debut as jmii. in thrills, the barcelonian producer displays a sound that s equally raw and lively, with a very personal sense of quirkiness. the title track is jmii s most expansive production to date. an uplifting house number built around an elastic bassline and sprinkled with a bubbly arpeggiated melody, echoed vocal snips and ravey pads. bailar is a sort of lunatic take on chi-house, with a crude bassline, psychotic organ chords and feverish percussion coming together to form an ultra-infectious groove. tightbrass follows a similar path, but conducted by frenzied synthetic horns that bring to mind a marching band of manic robots. in his remix, comeme s christian s. brings the track to a darker territory, reducing it to it s core elements and focusing in a nasty bassline that will for sure cause serious damage in the dancefloors in the upcoming months.

make no mistake, for vault series 15 the doors have been flung open to welcome a new act to the fold. theres very little known about mistake made. no records or releases exist to date, but they have impressed vault chief subjected enough to have them join the sequestered berlin-based crew. and in sublime compliance with the vault series creed, this debut effort from the shadowy outfit presents yet another set of functioning and frill-free dancefloor material, complete with a rusted-through hue of its own. on the a-side >wrist< jumps straight in with marching intent, complete with fidgety hat work thats both anxious and infectious. then on the flip, >ricochet< opens with field recordings tossed into a stormy concoction of ticks, hats and fuzzy atmospherics, teamed up here with one of those basslines that will keep you glued to the floor. >indec< then concludes in signature vault series style an ominous, growling number rattled with alarm bells and screeching, clangorous detail. its one of those monstrous slow-burners that leaves you wounded yet longing for more. all in all, a rounded first release from a new techno tour de force. this isnt the last we will be hearing from mistake made.

with credits between them ranging from hypercolour, future boogie, fear of flying, southern fried, save you and wolf, dj/producers james welsh and ste roberts team up under their r&w pseudonym for this, the 7th release on initials with its clear mandate from the word go back in 2012 to release only the most underground house and techno, initials (helmed by ste himself, hypercolours alex jones and 1trax label boss dave elkabas) delivers the goods yet again with the socks & scandals ep. at just 2 tracks, there is no need to say more, with opener meat an understated mechanical exploration into the art of evolving and hypnotic beat-crafting, while bucket sheep employs rhythmic detail in a broader soundscape to great effect, offsetting the incessant marching bass expertly.

body 11 is/was the one-man project of tim stickelbrucks. inspired by the late 70s/early 80s icons such as omd, human league, and cabaret voltaire, tim wrote and recorded 4 songs in 1987 in his apartment and self-released the mind 7 inch ep in 1988. rather obscure at the time, the 7 gained cult status later in the 90s when collectors and word of mouth fans began seeking out copies of the record.medical records is proud to reissue the mind ep 4 songs along with unreleased recordings created at the same time. the unreleased tracks were songs that were distributed only on cassette (to friends, etc) at the time. the tracks have been transferred from cassette.
this reissue/collection is presented on high-quality 180gram milky clear vinyl. features bonus insert with liner notes. limited edition.

emotional relish welcome in their second ep of 2013 with some solo work from scott fraser after a previous collaboration with headman and nitzer ebb vocalist douglas mccarthy. the light sleeper ep pairs two trademark fraser cuts with remixes from the aforementioned relish boss and fellow weatherall acolyte timothy j fairplay. a drab bassline wades *paraphase mine* into the murkier exclaves of synthy territory, allowing headman to lighten the mood by adding some tonal difference in his mix. fraser sets his arpeggios to flutter and bounce in *centreville lapse* with marching snares set to a severed heads styled reverb. fairplay does away with the tracks nosier components, demystifying frasers original for a warmer, eat petting remix.

four up-and-coming artists appear on shag edits volume 2 which is kick-started by rebels *you somebodies*, a bassy piece of looping filter house meant for peak time play. newcomer riri throws down jazzy horns, marching snares and acoustic rimshots in a slow moving *get it on*, while chockys *i like* features cut vocals caught between interchanging melodies of pulsating rhythms. jamie trench, responsible for the labels first ep, delivers sexy vocals in *locks, frocks & 2 floating sparrows*, a laid back disco joint with the same summery vibe as barmy miami night.

the second tape in the series, ferro #01 continues the path through the abyss of dubbed out techno sounds: ever forward with off-kilter resonations from the echo chamber and a pounding heart-beat throughout. like #00, this one is again a tape-only-release. each cassette is a unique piece of art – stamped, numbered and equipped with a link to the digital files. but ther is no way to get these files without grabbing a tape!
